Conviction of Christian convert, Mary Mohammadi, to imprisonment and flogging

Fatemeh (Mary) Mohammadi said that she refused to object to the verdict because the
appeal courts had become a confirmative court

Reports from Iran indicate that Fatemeh (Mary) Mohammadi, a Christian convert, was sentenced to 3 months and 1 day in prison on charges of breach of the peace by participating in an illegal gathering” (January 2020 protests after shutting down the Ukraine Flight by the IRGC)

The trial of Mary Mohammadi was held on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, in Branch 1167 of the Tehran Criminal Court

This Christian convert said about the conviction, “There was no evidence in the case, implying the indictment (breach of the peace by participating in an illegal gathering in January 2020 protests). I should have been acquitted, even based on the laws of the Islamic Republic, but I have been sentenced not only to imprisonment but also to flogging

She added, “Even if I was acquitted, it would not be a real acquittal, because we (I and my family) endured all kinds of torture, which are not mentioned in any of the laws and considered crimes. She said that “We refrained from objecting to the verdict because the appeals courts had become a confirmative court

It is said that the judge asked questions as an inquisition about religion and the reasons for her conversion to Christianity during the court session and said to Ms. Mohammadi: “Your name is Fatemeh, how are you a Christian?” Have you changed your religion and do not accept Islam? Do you know that Christianity has many gaps and that the path you have chosen is wrong? “Are families aware of changing your religion and have no problem with it?”

The trial of Mary Mohammadi was scheduled to be held on March 2, 2020, but was postponed due to the outbreak of the corona virus. This civil activist was temporarily released from Qarchak prison in Varamin on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, on bail of 30 million tomans (approximately 2000 $)

Mary Mohammadi was arrested by security police near Tehran’s Azadi Square on Sunday night, January 12, 2020, during a protest rally against shutting down the Ukraine Flight by the IRGC’ air force defense and expressing sympathy with the families of the victims and transferred to Tehran’s Vozara Detention Center

She had previously been sentenced to six months in prison by Judge Ahmadzadeh in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran , on charges of “membership in evangelical groups, Christian activities, and acting against national security through propaganda against the regime.” She was finally released from prison in the spring at the end of her sentence
